ABSTRACT: We propose an algorithm for inferring membership functions of fuzzy sets by exploiting a procedure originated in the realm of support vector clustering. The input to this procedure consists of points associated with a quantitative evaluation of their membership degree to a fuzzy set. Data are clustered in order to extract a "core" gathering all points definitely belonging to the set. This core is subsequently refined incorporating expert knowledge in the form of predefined shapes for the membership function. The method is extended in order to simultaneously learn several fuzzy sets defined over a universe of discourse, without requiring as previous knowledge either their number or approximated membership values. The procedure is successfully tested on a benchmark and specialized in order to tackle the problem of inferring shadowed sets.
